Biography

David Lee Bones was born in Toledo, OH, October 2, 1934, to J. Harold and Alice (Rowland). After series of illnesses over four years David made a peaceful transition into Spirit at Hospice of Northwest Ohio's Toledo Center on Wednesday, August 15, 2012. He graduated from DeVilbliss High School in 1957 and University of Toledo in 1962 with a Business Administration degree.

While still in high school, David decided he wanted to do something he enjoyed without getting a "real" job so in 1957, he created the first high school basketball scouting service, CageScope. One of David's long standing jokes was that CageScope sounded like a mouthwash for animals. At the peak of his career, David had over 230 colleges, in all divisions, subscribing to his service. He operated Dave Bones Publications for over 50 years and was co-director and founder of Blue Chip Basketball Camp in Kentucky for 26 years before retiring from both in 2005.

Always known for his humor, David, was a popular guest on sport talk shows and he was respected from coast-to-coast by both high school and college coaches. David was interviewed and quoted in numerous books, newspaper sport sections and was a columnist for The Basketball Times. One of his honors was joining the rank of Kentucky Colonels and participating in the organization of basketball tournaments leading up to the Kentucky Derby.

David was and avid University of Toledo, basketball and football fan, missing only 8 basketball home games in over 60 years, In addition to enjoying home football and basketball games, David followed the team on the road for many years. Many times, he and Susan served as a driver for the coaches wives and families for the away basketball games. He was a Toledo Rocket Club and UT Alumni member and donor.

In 1978, David married Susan (Krell) Bones. He has a step-son, Jeffrey R. (Susan) Dunn. David enjoyed traveling, both business and as pleasure trips which took him to many states and several countries. He and Susan loved Broadway and off Broadway shows and enjoyed many vacations in NYC. Walking the white sandy beaches and enjoying the turquoise blue ocean water of Hawaii, the Caribbean Islands, Florida and California were a favorite of David's.
